Definitions

 

Aerobic

Doing something in the presence of oxygen.

BMI (Body Mass Index)

Measures relative percentages of fat and muscle mass in the human body. Is weight divided by height.

Carbohydrate

Collection of organic compounds including: sugars, starches, celloses. Carbohydrates act as a dominant energy source in out bodies.

Detox Diet

Eliminations of certain foods from ones diet in an attempt to detoxify the body from years of toxin building up from those foods.

Diabetes

A serious metabolic disorder marked by persistent thirst and excessive  discharge of urine. Can be lethal if not treated.

Enzyme

Proteins or a collection of proteins in a living organism that act as a biochemical catalysts.

Fast Food

Cheap food, prepared quickly and served quickly with very little nutritional value eg. hamburgers and French Fries.

Food Pyramid

A diagram of nutritional needs for humans.

GI Index

Glycaemic index ranks foods by the amount blood sugar levels increase after eating the foods.

Glucose

Monosaccharide sugar. A major energy source of the human body.

Gluten

A protein found in flour. Between 0.5 - 1.0 % of the population is sensitive to gluten.

Isometric

Muscular contraction against resistance. the muscles length stays the same.

Nutrition

A study which deals with food and nourishment in humans.

Poaching

Cooking in water under heat.

Recipe

Directions with a list of ingredients for preparing food.

Soy Milk

nondairy milk made from soybeans that is used in recipes or as a beverage. Comes in powder and liquid form.

Supplement

Something added to your diet in the form of a pill, powder or liquid which completes it, making up for any deficiencies.

Unbleached Flour

White flour that has not been chemically whitened. Most grocery stores have it readily available.
